“Bono met his wife in high school,” Park says.
“So did Jerry Lee Lewis,” Eleanor answers.
“I’m not kidding,” he says.
“You should be,” she says, “we’re sixteen.”
“What about Romeo and Juliet?”
“Shallow, confused, then dead.”
”I love you,” Park says.
“Wherefore art thou,” Eleanor answers.
“I’m not kidding,” he says.
“You should be.”

Set over the course of one school year in 1986, ELEANOR AND PARK is the story of two star-crossed misfits – smart enough to know that first love almost never lasts, but brave and desperate enough to try. When Eleanor meets Park, you’ll remember your own first love – and just how hard it pulled you under.

Review:

Red haired Eleanor comes to a new school, she meets this boy named Park as they set off on a love journey. Eleanor doesn’t have as nice of a body shape as her mother, but Park seems to like her. At first it’s an exchange of comics and tapes, leading onto a romantic love story. Her mother marries Richie, a drinker and smoker who has no manners and practically hates the children. Eleanor has a sister Maisie, 3 brothers; Ben, Mouse (Jeremiah), and Little Richie. Eleanor must avoid Richie at all costs to prevent getting kicked out, while on the other hand Park has an almost perfect life. His parents love each other like a young couple, and Park has a younger brother named Josh. His father makes him take tae kwon do and his mother is a beautician. These 2 young high schoolers, from 2 different worlds end up together in a strong relationship.

Okay so this book is REALLY good! Like REALLY! It’s like 11:00 pm over here and I’m typing this book review. I just finished the book and I’m really excited to share it with you guys!! I loved so many things about this book, I loved how Rowell made Eleanor imperfect. It shows how 2 strangers can come so close, I also think that Rowell has a super cool first name. Rainbow!! Good for her parents! They picked an awesome name lolz! Alright back to the review I also really loved the plot, personally I think that this cover is one of the most boring ones I’ve ever seen. But don’t judge a book by its cover, it’s like a whole new world throughout the pages. I also really liked how Rowell didn’t use a modern setting; sure there were cars and stores, but Eleanor and Park played cassettes and tapes. It gave me the image of a modern yet old scene. I also liked how Rowell described Eleanor as wearing men clothes, I imagine her being a little more chubby wearing oversized men’s clothes. But when I see her with Park the picture instantaneously fits together. I also love how Rowell described the alley and the neighborhood, I can clearly imagine Eleanor running down the block to Park’s house and how each character acts. I also really liked how he switched between Eleanor’s perspective and Park’s perspective. That way you could read the book from 2 different view points.

Dislikes:

This paragraph for this book is extremely hard, the book wasn’t perfect but it was wonderful! Sometimes Rowell overuses curse words to emphasize what a character is saying, but overall this novel was wonderful. I also didn’t like the ending, it was good but it left me hanging. I wished that she finished it off,

***SPOILER ALERT***

instead of letting Cat go with Park to Prom and leaving Eleanor in Minnesota. I felt sympathy for her she had to leave everything and stay with her uncle and aunt.

This book was amazing I really liked it!!

I rate it a 8.75/10, just because there were some areas I didn’t like and that were yuck!

But definitely a cinnamon spice!! Lots of details, and many scenes that formed in my head.

***IMPORTANT INFO***

This book has some mature content and a little foul language, but overall it was clear.

I hope you guys read this book tell me what you think about it and what you would rate it!!

Goodreads:

When Imogen, a sixteen-year-old black belt in Tae Kwon Do, freezes during a holdup at a local diner, the gunman is shot and killed by the police, and she blames herself for his death. Before the shooting, she believed that her black belt made her stronger than everyone else — more responsible, more capable. But now her sense of self has been challenged and she must rebuild her life, a process that includes redefining her relationship with her family and navigating first love with the boy who was at the diner with her during the shootout. With action, romance, and a complex heroine, Bruised introduces a vibrant new voice to the young adult world — full of dark humor and hard truths.

Review:

Imogen is a strong girl who has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. She fails to rescue the life of a gunman and blames herself for his death. To prove herself again she wants to participate in a real fight to regain her confidence. A boy named Ricky was also at the diner during the hold up. Not only does she join worlds with him, she believes that he may be able to give her the fight she’s been waiting for.

The intriguing story encircles  romance and tae kwon do into a true plot. Imogen was a self confident girl and believed that she had responsibility and skill with her black belt.  This novel is very detailed and specific, Imogen goes through many obstacles and hardships after trying to recover from the diner incident. Ricky another witness of the hold up was with Imogen, he brings her back to life. All that Imogen concentrated on before was following the Children’s Home Rules, now she doesn’t care anymore. Each word on every page, brings you into Imogen’s life making you believe that you were her.

Likes:

I really liked the fact that Sarah Skilton took the book to a new level, she didn’t leave it as an ordinary story. She made Imogen make the choices that you wouldn’t have wanted her to make, Skilton broke Imogen into pieces as she then pieced her back together throughout the story. Skilton also identified Ricky’s place in the plot solid, instead of scattered. She placed him in as if he was  important in the story, she made him equal to Imogen. I liked how Skilton did that, she made it so that we could see and so could Imogen that she couldn’t do everything, she needed someone else. It’s been a while since I’ve found a good book, there were still places I think that could’ve been better but overall Skilton wrote the novel, as if she were Imogen and made the characters real.

Dislikes:

There weren’t many things that I disliked, but there were some that are hard to explain. I enjoyed the plot of the book and how it was written. In some areas I found the book more out of the genre, she added romance. I’m not that into books with the kissing and things, but she edged over a little in certain parts of the story. I didn’t find much that I didn’t like, there was a good plot and she made it more exciting.

P.S. If you’re reading the book, DJ is a girl. At first I thought she was a boy.

This book was excellent and I really enjoyed reading it.

I give it an 7.80 out of 10. Definitely a spice, interesting, not as exciting as some other books but I liked how the characters were developed.

There were some parts that I think that Skilton shouldn’t have included but overall it was an excellent novel young teenagers even adults would enjoy.

If you have read the book please do comment and let me know what you thought about the book, please rate it from 1-10.
